[CfP] 2nd NLIU – INDIA FOUNDATION CONSTITUTIONAL LAW SYMPOSIUM 14-15 March [Apply by 25 Jan]

NLIU Law Review in collaboration with India Foundation is conducting the "2nd NLIU – INDIA FOUNDATION CONSTITUTIONAL LAW SYMPOSIUM" from 14th – 15th March 2020.
The aim of the Symposium is to provide a platform for a discussion on Contemporary Constitutional Law Issues in India. The symposium is open for participation to students, researchers, faculty members, academicians, lawyers and legal experts in the field of Constitutional Law.
India Foundation is an independent research centre focussed on the issues, challenges and opportunities of the Indian polity. The Foundation believes in understanding contemporary India and its global context through a civilizational lens of a society on the forward move and NLIU Law Review is the flagship law journal of the National Law Institute University, Bhopal. It is a bi-annual, student-edited law journal with an aim to promote a culture of scholarly research and academic writing among students by publishing articles on subjects of interest to the legal profession and academia.
Eligibility
Students currently pursuing an LL.B.(Hons.)/LL.B. /LL.M. from a recognized university and faculty members of law are eligible to send in entries.
Structure
The manuscripts will be subject to the review by the editorial board of the NLIU Law Review. Manuscripts selected by the Technical and Content Review Board of the NLIU Law Review, will be sent for an external Peer review. The short-listing of top ten* manuscripts will be done on the basis of evaluation of the Editorial Board and the Peers of the NLIU Law Review.
On confirmation of participation in the symposium, shortlisted manuscripts will be published as a special issue of Volume IX of the NLIU Law Review. No publication fee will be charged and travel fare for shortlisted participants will be reimbursed.

* Ten is a tentative figure. Final decision on the number of shortlisted manuscripts will be taken by the organizers.
Themes
The paper submissions and presentations by the author(s) must strictly conform to originality within the broad theme of "Contemporary Constitutional Law Issues in India". A suggestive list of topics has been provided below in order to aid the participants; however participants are free to include any issues within the main theme.
1. Independence of the judiciary and judicial appointments
a. Judicial activism versus judicial overreach
b. Problems with the current system of judicial appointments
c. Recusal of judges: Need for regulation?
2. Nature of the federal structure of India
a. The constitutional legitimacy of the abrogation of Article 370
b. A constitutional analysis of the 2019 Karnataka political crisis
3. Impact of statutory developments on constitutional rights
a. Introduction of the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2019
b. Introduction of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019
4. Reintroduction of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019
5. Constitutionality of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2019
6. Any other constitutional law topic with contemporary relevance in India.

Rewards
The winner(s) of the symposium will be awarded prize money of Rs. 20,000/- The second best participant(s) will receive prize money of Rs. 15,000/- The third best participant(s) will receive a prize money of Rs. 10,000/-. We also have a best manuscript award of Rs. 5,000/-.
Submission Deadline
The original manuscripts must be sent to [email protected] by 25th January, 2020, 23:59 hours. The email must contain the manuscript in .doc/docx format. The email must also contain a cover letter containing the name(s) of the authors, the institution, the course and the year of study along with a declaration about the originality of the manuscript. A sample declaration form can be downloaded from the official website.
Past Edition
The previous edition of the Symposium saw illustrious panelists like ASG Vikramjit Banerjee and J. Sai Deepak take the dais in enlightening and spirited discussions on various constitutional issues of contemporary relevance. The selected manuscripts were presented by the authors before an eminent bench of judges and questioned on both the theoretical as well as the practical applications of their ideas and opinions. The Symposium gave the student community an opportunity to discuss and bring to fore the burning issues facing the country and provide solutions and recommendations.
